Visit Fes it is one of the world’s oldest cities, with 1.2 million people today, I love the chaos of Fes el Bali’s souks, where you can haggle for spices or a handwoven rug. The Al Quaraouiyine University, founded in 859, is a must-see for history lovers. Hungry? Grab a pastilla from a street vendor , it’s a sweet savory pie I can’t get enough of,At night, the Merenid Tombs offer stunning views of the city lights. Getting around is easy with petit taxis. Fes is a Morocco gem.
Fes el Bali, founded in 789 AD by Idris I , is a UNESCO gem with over 9,000 alleys, one of the world’s largest car free zones. I love getting lost in its amazing souks, haggling for spices near Bab Ftouh every morning around 8 AM when locals open with fresh mint and rugs.
Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, is the world’s oldest degree granting university, though non-Muslims can’t enter. I admire sketching its arches from Place Seffarine on Sundays around 3 PM when it’s quiet.
Jnan Sbil Gardens, created in the 19th century by Sultan Moulay Hassan , offer a green oasis with rare plants , a small lake, and cooling fountains. its good for chilling here after the medina.a must see attraction in fes.
dating back to the 11th century, is one of Fes’s oldest spots where artisans still dye leather with natural dyes like saffron and poppy. you will be amazed watching them stir colorful vats on Tuesdays around 10 AM , the smell’s strong, but the view’s worth it, so wear comfy shoes.
built in 1350 under the Marinid dynasty, is a 14th century gem with stunning zellige tiles and a climbable minaret if open . I love its peaceful courtyard, praying there on Fridays around noon when the call to prayer echoes.
The Fes Festival of World Sacred Music, held since 1994 in late June around the 22nd, brings spiritual music to sites like Bab Makina. I danced to Sufi chants last year on June 22nd ,book tickets early for the electric medina vibe.
Nejjarine Museum, housed in a 18th century fondouk, showcases cedar wood carvings from Fes. I love the rooftop views, sketching there on Mondays around 11 AM , grab mint tea downstairs and bring a sketchbook, a cultural thing to do in Fes.
Dar Batha Museum, built in 1915 by Sultan Moulay Hassan, is a 19th century palace with Fes art like ceramics and textiles. you will love its pottery and carved doors, exploring on Wednesdays around 2 PM when it’s quiet, the garden’s great for a sit.
